Notes - Jakob (Jacob) Van Vlack, b. June 10, 1787 in Dutchess Co., NY (other sources say b. July 10, 1787); bpt. Fishkill, Sept. 16, 1787 (baptismal record lists his name as "Jakob"), d. circa 1867; m. about 1812, Abigail Paddock of VT., she b. 1792. Their seven children were all born in Fishkill, NY. About 1841, we find Jakob and his unmarried children moving west. He is listed in the Rochester, NY directory as living there, occupation - joiner (an expert carpenter or cabinet maker). He is not listed in the 1844 directory, so must have gone further west to the Chicago area to join his two sons who arrived there earlier. Son Theodore was married near Chicago in 1838. Townsend was recorded in the 1850 census as living in Rochester, but moved west later. Egbert had a carpenter shop in Chicago in 1846.
There was a so-called "Dutch settlement" there where they possibly stayed to get oriented and receive fair treatment when they purchased land in the Geneva-Wheaton area. Chicago was a bee-hive of land speculation for all of Illinois, and son Egbert, when an adult, was a member of an appointed group there formed to quell land jumping and help the courts rule on clear title to lands. Jakob was a joiner all of his life and had several unmarried children living with him. In 1850, Jakob and Abigail were living in the same residence with daughter Rebecca and her husband George Jennings in Virgile, Kane Co., IL. Jakob died about 1867 and is buried at West Side Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva, IL (no gravestone). Following a visit there in 1967, Walter W. Van Vlack received a letter from the sexton offering title to the plot (5 graves remaining) for $200, as the closest interested kin. Walter stated that he "declined with thanks". Children:
Egbert B., b. circa 1812 (age 38 in 1850 U.S. census for IL census) Theodore Paddock, b. 1813
Hiram, b circa 1818
Townsend C., b. circa 1818
Nathaniel, b. circa 1829
Rebecca, b. circa 1833
