  • Notes
    • b. Jan. 4, 1832 in Ulster Co., NY; m. February 20, 1855, Clarissa Blackney, dau. of Charles and Fanny Blackney, she b. Feb. 20, 1835 in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus Co., NY, she d. December 1, 1855 in Versailles, Chautauqua Co., NY shortly after her marriage. In the 1855 census (Cattaraugus Co., NY) he was listed as a mechanic. He enlisted for service in the Civil War and was a sergeant in the 6th and 12th Regts., Wis. Vol. Inf. After the war he went further west. At one time he was in Wyoming. In a letter from John to his sister "Lib" (Elizabeth) and her husband dated Feb. 15, 1864 and written while a patient in Harewood Hospital, Washington, DC, he commented on the fact that he wanted to return to his regiment. He had another "one year and 9 months" to serve at that time. After completing his "tour of duty", he returned home to visit with his parents, disappeared, and was never heard from again (cor. from John's nephew - Hall G. Van Vlack - RIN ) but copies of letters written from Henry to brother George showed that he was in Wisconsin in 1865 and engaged to be married to "A.G. Scammon". He had also applied for and received a pension from the government for his service in the Civil War.
