Notes - Ellsworth Jasper Van Vlack, Jr., b. Nov. 5, 1927 at Jackson St., Beacon, N.Y., m. on July 2, 1950 at St. John?s Episcopal Church, Cornwall, N.Y. to Shirley Norma Goodall, b. Dec. 29, 1930 at Firthcliff, N.Y., daughter of Norman and Alma Augusta (Babcock) Goodall. Ellsworth attended high school in Beacon, N.Y., and prior to graduating, enlisted, at age 17, in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific theater aboard the USS 00693, a destroyer of the SUMNER CLASS. This ship was a part of the fleet in 1945 that conducted the first atomic bomb blast in the Pacific. In 1946 when his father died he was given an early discharge to care for his mother who had taken ill. He worked at several jobs for a period of five years, and then was employed with the gas division of the Central Hudson Gas and Electric Utility Corp. for 36 years, during which time he completed his high school education. He retired in 1987 at age 60. Wife Shirley graduated from Cornwall High School and worked as a medical receptionist for several doctors until leaving to care for their two children. Twelve years later she began work again at the Cornwall High School library as assistant librarian. Shirley became interested in family genealogy and spent about eight years tracing her mother's family to the early 1700's - also her father's family and Ellsworth's mother?s and father's families.
After the death of Shirley, Ellsworth later married Barbara Catherine (Duncan) Parkton b. Feb. 9, 1943 at Wappinger Falls, m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Cornwall, N.Y. on April 25, 1981. Barbara is the daughter of Wilfred and Catherine Augusta (Craig) Parkton. Barbara worked in retailing for several department stores in Dutchess County up to the time, of their marriage. Ellsworth enjoys swimming, bowling, fishing and especially dancing, as does wife Barbara. Ellsworth has aspirations to dance the polka at 85 years young.
