Notes - Charles Edward Van Vlack, b. Dec. 9, 1845 at Rochester, NY, d. Oct. 15, 1942. Charles had moved to Chicago, IL by 1861 and there at the age of 16 enlisted in the Union Army as a drummer boy in 1862, discharged 1863 in Chicago, IL, re-enlisted in 1864, then discharged at the end of the war in Louisville, KY - a private. At one time, he was living in Geneva and was in Illinois Co. D, 52nd Infantry during the Civil War. On Oct. 25, 1873, in Chicago, he m. Catherine Jane Garnett, she b. Sept. 25, 1851 in WI, d. Oct. 21, 1923 at Ashland, WI. They moved to Ashland in 1881 and both are bd. there. Charles was a railroad engineeer and was said to have married a second time and living, in retirement, in Jacksonville, FL (Ref. Mary Sage Van Vlack letter 1926). Children:
