I think she always felt sorry for their having lost their mother and tried to make it up to them" (quote from Martha's son George as stated to his daughter Julia). In cor. from Julia, she stated "I think it may be due to the fact that her own mother, Mary Foster Van Vlack, died when she was nine and a stepmother, Mary Vail Van Vlack, brought up Martha Ann and her four sisters".
