Notes - George Washington Van Vlack, b. May 2, 1839, in Versailles, Cattaraugus Co., NY; d. Feb. 21, 1917; m. at Forestville on Nov. 8, 1865, Mariette Amelia Merrill, she b. July 15, 1847 in Dayton, NY and d. May 4, 1920, a dau. of Leonard and Eliza (Judd) Merrill. He enlisted for service in the Civil War as a Private with the 64th Regt., NY Vol. Inf. on Oct. 5, 1861, served more than 3 years, discharged on Oct. 10, 1864 as a 1st Sgt and then was awarded a commission as a Breveat 2nd Lieut. on Oct. 10, 1868 (commission given for "gallant and meritorious services"). Ref. New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865 by Phisterer, 1909, third edition, Vol. I, part, 3, pg. 362. The "gallant and meritorious services" consisted of George single-handedly capturing two Confederate Generals: Major General G.H. Steward and Brigadier General Edward A. Johnson of the Confederate Army and then delivering them in person to General Hancock, his Corps Commander, on the 25th day of August, 1864. George spent his last four months of his service in Libby Prison and on Belle Isle. George buried brother Henry Van Vlack (F140) after the battle of Antietam described in Henry's biography above. George and Mariette's marriage took place shortly after George's discharge from the Civil War. They lived in Perrysburg, NY for 1 and 1/2 years, Crawford Co., MO for 1 and 1/2 years, Brant 2 years, then at Perrysburg for the remainder of their lives. They lived together as husband and wife for 51 years. George was a life-long farmer. George and wife Mariette are buried at Rathbun Cemetery, Chautauqua Co., NY. Children:
