Notes - Lynn Raymond Van Vlack. b. April 17, 1883 on his parent's farm in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus Co., NY where he attended grade school. In order to get a high school education (Lynn later became a noted attorney) he and his brother Hall G. (RIN 1232) walked several miles in the early morning and at night, to a railroad to catch a freight train on which they could ride free in the caboose for 10 miles to Forestville High School to get an education. Lynn became vice-president of the senior class and Hall G. (his brother) was president. He graduated from Forestville High School in 1903 and both he and Hall gave orations at the 36th annual commencement program. He "...then began the study of law under Judge W.S. Thrasher, of Dayton, NY. He then entered the law department of the University of Michigan, whence he was graduated LL.D., class of 1910. He was admitted to the New York bar the same year and located at Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., where he formed a partnership with Richard A. Hall, and as Hall & Van Vlack they practiced until the fall of 1914, [Lynn] ...then practicing alone in South Dayton until his enlistment early in 1917. At the close of his military acivities,...he returned home ...and was professionally employed by the firm of Thrasher & Clapp, of Jamestown [NY]. He then became a member of the law firm, Van Vlack, Peterson & Bargar, with offices in the Fulton [sic]* building, Jamestown. A. Bartholdi Peterson later withdrew from the firm and Lynn Judge A.E. Bargar continued with the law partnership for 33 years. In 1953, Judge Bargar retired and John L. Goodell became the new partner in the firm.
Lynn aided in organizing the 174th Company, Home Defense Reserve, and on Sept. 1, 1917, was commissioned second lieutenant of the New York Home Defense Reserve by Governor Whitman. In that capacity he aided materially in the training of a large number of men who later entered the service." (Ref. History of Chautauqua County and Its People, Vol. 2, 1921, pp. 310-311). Lynn m. (1) Florence Ada Harmon, dau of William Henry and Minnie (Merrill) Harmon of Cherry Creek, NY on Feb. 1, 1910, she b. Nov. 23, 1891 in Chicago, IL and d. Jan. 20, 1921. Florence is bd. in Cherry Creek Cem., Cherry Creek, NY. They were the parents of 4 children. He m. (2) Madge F. Ferry, she b. Feb. 1, 1894 Hill Creek, Middle Park, Grande County, CO and d. August 9, 1979. Lynn d. Sept. 22, 1968. Both Lynn and Madge are bd. in Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, NY. Children:
