Notes - Gilbert P. Van Vleck, b. Feb. 11, 1806; d. June 26, 1843 in Oswego, NY; m. in Oswego, July 18, 1830, Elizabeth Ostrander, who was b. Jan. 5, 1804, and d. Dec. 14, 1880 (fam. rec. sent by Mrs. Robert A. Van Vleck). He was a contractor in Oswego. Gilbert was elected as Town Constable - Town of Oswego - in 1842 and 1843. The parentage of Elizabeth Ostrander has, in the past, been questioned. Elizabeth, born in Saratoga Co., was a dau. of Matthew and Rachel (DePew) Ostrander. Rachel (DePew) Ostrander d. May 1, 1858, in her 89th yr., at Hannibal, Oswego Co. The Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte says that Gilbert married Elizabeth Armstrong but the 1850 Federal Census records of Oswego Co., NY show a Rachel Ostrander living in household of John Ostrander (probably her son) and in the same household was "Betsey Van Vleck" (age 47 and Gilbert's widow) and Ulysses Van Vleck, age 7 or 9 (Gilbert and Elizabeth's son who was b. 1842). That would imply that Elizabeth was actually the daughter of Matthew and Rachel as Mrs. Robert A. Van Vleck above noted. Three of Gilbert's sons--Elias, Robert A., and Ulysses Gilbert Van Vlack--are listed in the Hist. of Oswego County as among Hannibal's Civil War Soldiers. Children: Elias D. (?), b. 1831
Matthew, b. 1834
Eliza, b. 1835
Robert Augustus, b. 1837
Mary Ellin, b. 1840
Ulysses Gilbert, b. 1842
Andrew, b. circa 1843 (? his placement here)
