  • Notes
    • Marinus Roelofse Van Vleckeren (Van Vlekkeren)(1), b. probably in the last quarter of the 17th century (circa 1675); d. after 1747, when his name appears on the Fishkill, Dutchess County tax list (name listed as Marinus Van Vleekeren); m. May 19, 1702, Dina Theunis Idesse Van Huyse, who was bpt. Jan. 22, 1679 in RDC, New York Record, NY. In the baptismal records (RDC, New York Rec.), Dina's parents were listed as being Theunis and Jannetye (Thyssen) Idesse. Marinus' name on the marriage record was listed as Marinus Roelofzen van Vleckeren. When Marinus received property from his father-in-law's estate, (Riker's History of Harlem, rev. 1904, p. 592) Dina's parents were listed as Theunis Idensen Van Huyse and Jannetye (Van Pelt) Van Huyse. Jannetje's full maiden name was Jannetje Laenen van Pelt and the descendants of Mattys ("Thys") Laenen van Pelt line (Jannetje's father) started using the surname of LANE in the middle 1600's. The descendants of Mattys' brother (Teunis Janszen Lanen van Pelt) began to use the surname of VAN PELT.
Marinus "Roeliffs" was appointed constable from the Out Ward for the "Bowry Division" at a meeting of the Common Council in New York, Sept. 29, 1709 (Min. of the C.C., 2:384, 387). He later petitioned this body for a grant of land, containing 150 acres or thereabouts, lying near land of Teunis Idesse (ibid., p. 447). After Teunis Idensen Van Huyse died, his large farm, which extended from the present 89th St. to West 107th on the Hudson River, was divided among his children. Marinus received, for his wife, Lot No. 1 and 1/3 of No. 2 (James Riker: Hist. of Harlem, rev., 1904, p. 592). The date of the distribution of the property was June 22/23, 1720. In the 1740's Marinus and Dina left New York and purchased land from Madame Catharyna Brett in Dutchess Co. (Dutchess Co. Mtgs., Lib. 5, p. 79). His name (listed as Marinus Van Vleekeren) appears there on the Fishkill tax list from 1745 to 1747.
On the baptism records for Marinus' and Dina's children, the surname Van Vleckeren was not used and variations on Marinus' first name were used such as: Merynes, Marinus, Merynus, Merynis, and Merinus. The surname used for the baptisms of all children was Roelofse. Children:

      Jannetje, bpt. 1703
      Abraham, bpt. 1704
      Teunis, bpt. 1707, d. young
      Jan, bpt. 1710
      Hendrik, b. 1712
      Teunis, bpt. 1716, d. young
      Teunis, bpt. 1718
      Aron, bpt. 1720

      1. Baptism and marriage records of descendants through Generation 4 indicate that the surname used was Van Vleckeren or Van Vlekkeren. Since the simpler forms "Van Vlack" and "Van Vleck" are the surnames used by most of Marinus' descendants, Van Vlack will be used starting with Generation 5 except in those cases where a family has definitely adopted the "Van Vleck" spelling.
